Our Process

Our dyeing process takes several days to complete. All of our pieces are one of a kind and impossible to replicate due to the nature of the natural dyeing process. The silks are carefully selected from vintage saris and one sari cuts only one full suit and up to two dresses. No two pieces are exactly alike. All details are hand sewn. Because we select vintage material, it is normal to find very small holes, loose threads, and irregularities, or sometimes even small stains on areas of the fabric. We celebrate these “imperfections” as part of the art of the piece.

Each piece is dyed with several different dye materials and variations in color and depth are to be expected as is consistent with natural dyes.

All plant dyes are harvested in a sustainable way that supports the communities we work with.

Each textile undergoes its own special process that spans the course of several days including:

24 hours of mordanting with lemon and salt,

24-48 hours of extracting the dye from the plant matter or longer in some cases,

24 hours of tying, binding, wrapping, dyeing, washing and drying,

Multiple colors could add an additional 48 hours.
